A Midsummer Night's Dream

Directing the mechanicals

A Midsummer Night's Dream is a play written by William Shakespeare. In that play, there is one part where the actors had to do comedy. Because the teacher had to direct another group of actors and so the student director, they told me to direct the most comedic scenes.

The big obstacle for me was that I never directed, so I started to see tips on how to direct. And first of all, I had to read the script and understand what was going on on that scene. I saw other plays like The Play that Goes Wrong, and other versions of those scenes like the Beatles did, which I got so many ideas to direct those scenes. This is a learning outcome because it shows commitment and perseverance in this experience.

I was working with actors that were mostly from freshmen, so I knew I could be harsh with them. This is a learning outcome because it made me recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions. This means that I had to instruct them and be nice to them, so they don't feel bad.

At the end, when Mr. San Roman saw the play, he was laughing at the time. I had to create a way how to make the public laugh, and I did it. Whether it was to show the big movements and gestures that they got or those expressions, the actors did everyone was laughing.
